From the original hot chicken flavour to Carbonara, Rosé and 2x Spicy: how to build a Buldak range that sells.

Few instant noodle brands have travelled as far, or as fast, as Buldak. Launched by South Korea’s Samyang Foods in 2012, Buldak (불닭, literally “fire chicken”) turned a single, intensely spicy stir-fried noodle into a global range of flavours, formats and spin-off products. For retailers and distributors, it is one of the clearest examples of a brand that customers ask for by name.

The story behind Buldak

Samyang Foods produced South Korea’s first instant ramen in 1963. Nearly half a century later, it launched Buldak Bokkeum Myeon, a stir-fried noodle tossed in a fiery hot chicken sauce rather than served in soup. The noodles reached an international audience through “fire noodle challenge” videos, in which people filmed themselves attempting a bowl. Curiosity turned into loyalty, and Buldak grew into a full range with flavours for every heat tolerance.

Understanding the Buldak flavour range

Buldak flavours fall into three broad groups, which makes it easier to plan a balanced range:

  • Signature heat: Original and 2x Spicy, the flavours that built the brand’s reputation.
  • Creamy and cheesy: Carbonara, Cream Carbonara, Cheese, Quattro Cheese and Rosé, which balance the spice with richer sauces and are often the entry point for new customers.
  • International twists: Habanero Lime, Taco, Jjajang (black bean), Yakisoba, Swicy (sweet and spicy) and Truffle, for adventurous shoppers and repeat buyers looking for something new.

Formats: packets, cups and big bowls

Most Buldak flavours are available in more than one format. Packets (around 130–145 g) are the core of a supermarket range. Cups (70–80 g) suit convenience stores and impulse purchases. Big bowls (105–120 g) offer a larger ready-to-eat portion. Carrying the same flavour across formats helps customers find their favourite wherever they shop.

Beyond noodles: sauces, snacks and more

Buldak’s popularity has carried the brand into adjacent categories. Our catalogue includes Buldak hot sauces in bottles and single-serve sachets, potato chips, mac and cheese, tteokbokki (Korean rice cakes), wide glass noodles, dumplings and fried rice. Displayed together, these lines can turn a Buldak section into a destination for the brand’s fans.

Tips for building a Buldak range

  • Lead with Original and Carbonara: the best-known heat and the most approachable flavour.
  • Add 2x Spicy for heat seekers, and one or two creamy flavours such as Rosé or Cheese for milder palates.
  • Rotate the newer international flavours to keep the range fresh for repeat customers.
  • Use cups and big bowls in convenience channels, and packets and multipacks in supermarkets.
  • Check label language requirements: Buldak is produced with different packaging for different markets.

Merchandising Buldak in store

Buldak packaging is colour-coded by flavour: black for Original, red for 2x Spicy, pink for Carbonara, and other colours for the newer variants. That makes it well suited to block displays, in which each flavour forms a vertical column of colour that shoppers can spot from a distance.

  • Add simple heat-level labels (mild, hot, very hot) so first-time buyers can choose with confidence.
  • Place Buldak hot sauces beside the noodles. Customers who enjoy the noodles often want the sauce for other dishes.
  • Keep cups near the till or in grab-and-go chillers and fixtures, where impulse purchases happen.
  • Highlight new flavours at eye level to encourage repeat customers to try something different.

Storage and stock rotation for Buldak

Like most dry instant noodles, Buldak products should be kept in their cartons in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, strong odours and damp floors. Check best-before dates when goods arrive, and rotate stock so that the earliest dates are sold first. Frozen Buldak lines, such as frozen tteokbokki, must stay frozen from delivery to sale.
